The more I know how to do, the more I want to do.

It's true that most of what I'm doing is at the level of the individual--the weakest level, at least in some ways, for bringing about change. And yet there is so much to learn, and such excitement in learning it and sharing it.

Not to mention that I am more tuned in to these issues than I have ever been before.

Hm. I wonder... what if I tracked letters and emails sent, along with the plastic? Is there an upward trend, as I think there is, in my outward gestures, at the same time I'm making the small, almost inward changes?Cat C-Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10002916434676859262noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25987874.post-6215634836779750412011-02-23T19:57:50.409-05:002011-02-23T19:57:50.409-05:00Cat,This is excellent.BTW, as a somewhat comic (?)...Cat,

This is excellent.

BTW, as a somewhat comic (?) aside: http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/discoblog/2011/02/17/10000-gizmo-lets-you-turn-plastic-bags-back-into-petroleum/Bright Crowhttp://walhydra.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25987874.post-22760613312905079922011-02-23T14:42:50.739-05:002011-02-23T14:42:50.739-05:00Thanks, Cat. Suddenly you're not okay with factory meat, even if it's wrapped in paper. Suddenly it's not the just the environmental impact of the plastic, it's how that production is a livelihood for others in a desperate economy - and how do we change that structure? It's the "community", not just the garden.

2. As I read this, I kept thinking back to Dorothy Day's feeling that her work was not about being effective, it was about being faithful. Less plastic = effective. Your witness = faithful. Faithful, as I see it reflected in this post, is fluid. It is changing, it is open to new revelation, it is shaped and formed by those you interact with. It deepens as your consideration of your community broadens.

Thank you for sharing your process as your witness deepens.

"The challenge is to learn to respond immediately to whatever it is time for" - Benedictine sayingKathleenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05057008232376370386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25987874.post-75883919927446482572011-02-19T20:41:18.047-05:002011-02-19T20:41:18.047-05:00I love this post, Cat. When I find myself dangling painfully between my own perfectionism and my apathy, I'll remember your words here and remember that the third choice of stumbling forward with hope is sometimes the most sustainable.
